The parts of Medicare, explained
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 or older. It also covers younger people with certain disabilities or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Understanding each part is the first step:
- Part A (Hospital Insurance): inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health services.
- Part B (Medical Insurance): doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and some home health care.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage): an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurers, often including prescription, dental and vision benefits.
- Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): helps pay for prescription medications through private plans.

FAQ
Common Medicare questions
What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?
Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that often bundles drug, dental and vision coverage, usually with a provider network. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy works alongside Original Medicare to help pay deductibles, coinsurance and copays, and generally lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare.
Am I eligible for Medicare?
Most people become eligible at 65. You may qualify earlier if you've received Social Security Disability benefits for 24 months or have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS.
When should I enroll in Medicare?
Your Initial Enrollment Period is seven months long: it starts three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month and ends three months after. Enrolling late can trigger lifelong penalties, so it's worth planning ahead.
Can I change my Medicare plan during Open Enrollment?
Yes. During the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 through December 7, you can switch Medicare Advantage or Part D plans or return to Original Medicare. Changes take effect January 1.
Does Medicare cover prescriptions, dental or vision?
Original Medicare covers very little routine dental or vision care and doesn't include most outpatient prescriptions. Part D plans cover prescriptions, and many Medicare Advantage plans include drug, dental and vision benefits.
Does it cost anything to get help from you?
No. Our Medicare guidance is free. We're compensated by the insurance companies when you enroll, and you won't pay more by working with us.
