Health insurance built for people who work for themselves

Owning your own business gives you freedom — but it also means nobody hands you a benefits package. As a sole proprietor, freelancer or 1099 contractor, you're responsible for protecting your health, your family and the business that depends on you.

American Medical Plans has helped self-employed Americans find quality, affordable health coverage for more than 25 years. We understand variable income, write-offs and the trade-offs between private and Marketplace coverage, so you can get back to running your business.

Your options as a sole proprietor

Private (non-ACA) health plans

Underwritten private plans often deliver lower premiums and national networks for healthy business owners — and they're not tied to your income, so there's no subsidy reconciliation surprise at tax time.

ACA Marketplace plans

If your income qualifies for a premium tax credit or you have significant health conditions, a Marketplace plan may be the better value. We'll run the numbers both ways.

Small group coverage

Once you add employees, group health insurance can cover your whole team and offers potential tax advantages for the business.

Supplemental protection

Pair your health plan with critical illness, accident or life insurance to protect your income if you can't work.

FAQ

Self-employed health insurance questions

What health insurance options do sole proprietors have?

Most sole proprietors choose between private individual plans, ACA Marketplace plans, and — if you have at least one W-2 employee besides a spouse — small group coverage. We compare all three for you.

Can I deduct my health insurance premiums?

Many self-employed people can deduct health insurance premiums for themselves, their spouse and dependents under the self-employed health insurance deduction, subject to IRS rules. Talk with your tax professional about your situation.

Can I get a group plan as a one-person business?

Generally, small group plans require at least one eligible employee who isn't the owner or the owner's spouse. If you're a true one-person business, individual private or Marketplace plans are usually the right fit.

What if my income changes year to year?

Variable income can make ACA subsidies unpredictable and lead to repayment at tax time. Private plans aren't tied to income, which many business owners prefer. We'll help you weigh both.
