Individual & family health insurance made simple

Whether you're self-employed, between jobs, retiring early or simply shopping for a better plan, buying health insurance on your own can feel overwhelming. American Medical Plans makes it easy. Our licensed advisors compare private and Marketplace plans from top-rated carriers and match your family to coverage that fits your doctors, your medical needs and your budget.

What is individual and family health insurance?

Individual and family health insurance is coverage you purchase yourself — not through an employer or a government program like Medicare or Medicaid. It's the right fit for:

  • Self-employed individuals, freelancers and 1099 contractors
  • Part-time workers without employer benefits
  • Early retirees under 65
  • Families who don't have access to employer-sponsored coverage
  • Anyone in a transition between jobs

How we help

Personalized, no-obligation consultations

We start by learning your healthcare needs, preferred doctors, prescriptions and budget. Whether you want comprehensive coverage or something lean, we'll help you find the right balance.

Private and Marketplace plans compared

We compare private, non-ACA plans against ACA Marketplace plans — including any premium tax credits you qualify for — so you can see the true cost of each option.

The right balance of premium and protection

We'll show you how premiums, deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums work together, so you understand what you'll actually pay when you use your coverage.

Year-round support

After you enroll, we answer coverage questions, help with claims and review your plan every year to make sure it still fits.

Enrollment periods you need to know

ACA Open Enrollment: begins November 1. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1; final deadlines vary by state.
Special Enrollment Period: available for 60 days after a qualifying life event such as losing other coverage, getting married, having a baby or moving.
Private plans: no enrollment window — apply any time and change plans when you need to.

FAQ

Individual & family health insurance questions

What's the difference between Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum plans?

Metal levels apply to ACA Marketplace plans and describe how costs are shared. Bronze plans have the lowest premiums and highest out-of-pocket costs; Platinum plans are the reverse. Silver plans are the only tier eligible for cost-sharing reductions if your income qualifies.

Can I get health insurance if I'm self-employed?

Absolutely. Self-employed people can choose individual private plans, Marketplace plans, or in some cases small group coverage. See our sole proprietor health insurance page for options built for business owners.

How much does individual health insurance cost?

It depends on your age, location, household size, tobacco use, income and, for private plans, your health. We'll give you exact quotes from multiple carriers instead of averages.

Do I qualify for a premium tax credit?

Households with income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level may qualify for ACA premium tax credits. Above 400%, the credit is no longer available after the enhanced subsidies expired, which is when private plans often become the better value.

Is short-term health insurance a good idea?

Short-term medical can bridge a gap between jobs or until other coverage starts, but it typically excludes pre-existing conditions and isn't designed as long-term protection. We'll help you decide whether it fits your situation and what your state allows.

When can I enroll?

Private plans are available year-round. ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment begins November 1 each year; enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1 (final deadlines vary by state). A Special Enrollment Period may apply after a life event such as losing employer coverage, marriage, a new baby or a move.
